Money Mule Scams

Using a money mule is considered a type of money laundering where a person receives and moves funds that come from illegal sources like fraud and other criminal activities. Unfortunately, some money mules are actually victims who are just lured into such activity through scams.

They are just deceived by fraudsters by offering them "easy money" and other opportunities that may seem like legitimate.

Here's how not to become a victim of Money Mule scams
  1. Do not accept fund transfer or send requests from unknown person or company.
  2. Do not lend or share your bank account details to anyone for moving or receiving money.
  3. Never share your bank account information with unknown person or source.
  4. Always think twice if an offer is too good to be true. Especially, when an offer is given in exchange of your bank account information.

20/80 Budgeting Rule

Many of us would have heard of the “Income – Expenses = Savings” approach to personal finances, but merely allocating the remaining amount of your income to savings will not help you reach your financial goals efficiently. We’d like to introduce you to the 20-80 budgeting rule!

20/80 Budgeting Rule

80% Needs / Wants
  • 50% for needs: Bills, insurance, groceries.
  • 50% for wants: Shopping, Entertainment.
20% Savings
  • Deposited into high interest savings account.
Commit to savings first

Commitment is one of the key factors to successfully save and manage your money. Instead of only saving what’s left at the end of each month, be intentional and set aside 20% of your income at the start of the month to your ING Save account. This simple yet effective budgeting method ensures that you prioritize your savings and leave it to grow with 2.5% p.a. interest rate.

Maximize what you can spend

The remaining 80% of your income can be spent on your needs and wants. You can allocate this fund into 50% for needs such bills and groceries, and 30% for wants – to shop and for entertainment. This dedicated allocation allows you to focus on the essential things and minimize spending on the things that are optional.

One way you can prevent overspending is to separate this fixed spending amount into your ING Pay account. ING Pay allows you to take care of your bills and transfer funds where you need them with no transaction fees. You also get a virtual debit card for online purchases and can request for a free physical debit card so you can conveniently use it to withdraw cash at any local BancNet ATMs or pay at shops and restaurants.

Importance of budgeting

Of course, this is just a recommendation to start budgeting smart. At the end of the day, it ultimately depends on your financial situation and goals. If you can commit more than 20% to your savings, that would be even better! If you wish to commit more to your needs than wants once in a while, that is fine too. But for those who have just started earning an income, this would be a great system to follow so that you can cultivate the habit of budgeting. Over time, you can always adjust the saving and spending proportions to suit your needs.

5 Ways To Make Saving More Fun

Saving money isn’t usually high up on people’s list of fun things to do, and it clearly doesn’t set off the brain’s reward system as much as spending does.

Although with a little help from technology and your mobile banking app, you can definitely hack your brain to turn you into a more willing saver in no time.

Here are five top tips to start with:

  1. Be more mindful of your money, It’s your money and you want to enjoy it — that’s okay but avoid making financial decisions that you might regret in the long run. Take control of your funds by setting up an account at an all-digital bank like the ING Savings Account. You can bank on your smartphone without the endless temptations of dipping into your savings when you use an ATM card.
  2. “Payday, Save day”. Every payday, set aside a certain amount and move it seamlessly to your ING account via interbank fund transfers or mobile check deposits, a local first. Doing this will help you to feel more in control about your financials and avoid spending beyond your means.
  3. Take on a challenge from time to time. Once you get home from work or a quick errand, put all your 5- or 10-peso coins in a jar. You may also accumulate them so they can serve as your emergency fund. How about a little weekly challenge where you put aside P100 the first week of the month, P200 the second week, and so on? Saving can be a good push and a way to nurture your sense of determination.
  4. Turn into a ‘deals diva’ and ‘purchase police’ in one. Take advantage of your credit card’s seasonal discounts or rebates on grocery shopping. It’s cheaper to eat or shop at certain establishments on certain times of the day or week so keep an eye on offers and special plates. Don’t forget to check out price slashes at your favourite gas station, too. While you’re at it, create a mandatory waiting period for new purchases, such as delaying it for seven full days so you can take a breather, think clearly, and prevent another regretful buy.
  5. Get a savings buddy. This could be a friend or a relative who can join you in your #fundsforthefuture goals — someone whom you can chat or e-mail with every week to track or discuss your progress. You can even have fun together with a little challenge, such as whoever saves the most on a given month has to buy dinner or pay for a movie. Your savings buddy can also be a budgeting app that prompts you to live within your means, helps you strategize in smart gifting or creative debt repayment, or prunes your expense list with intuitive features.

In your personal mission to save, make sure your bank is on your side. For an EXTENDED period, ING still offers a 4.0% interest rate per annum (p.a.) for balances of up to P10 million. Existing customers and newly-opened accounts will enjoy this high interest rate.

This is an increase from its previous 2.5% rate p.a. and is over 10 times higher than rates currently offered by other savings products in banks. With this much interest rate, you get more from your hard-earned money and don’t feel your savings fund is just sitting idly by until you need to dip into it.

5 Tips To Stay Safe & Healthy At Home

There’s no denying that the pandemic is constantly changing our day to day lives. A lot of us feel anxious and overwhelmed, and this may take its toll on our physical and mental health. To help put you in a more positive position, we gathered five ways on keeping your body and mind strong throughout the day:

Start your mornings with a routine.

Flexibility and the ability to adapt in this ever-changing situation is something we’ve mastered along the way, but that comes at the expense of putting a halt to our previously established routines. To better care for your social and emotional well-being, it may help to build and maintain a new pandemic routine—even just as you start your mornings and ease into your to-do list. Having this lets you regain a sense of normalcy and structure and gives you a feeling of certainty and being in control.

Start with simple activities, like spending the first 30 minutes of your day doing indoor exercises or reading a book. You can also add regular online meetups with your friends and families in your routine to keep your social life active.

Live a healthy life.

The best defense to any sickness is our overall well-being. It’s important to keep ourselves physically fit even though we’re just staying at home. Consume more fruits and vegetables and try to stay away from processed food. You can do simple adjustments at home, like opening your windows in the morning so you can enjoy the sun for more Vitamin D.

Pick up a hobby or two.

Whether it be your job, school, or just regular housework, tending to your everyday responsibilities may take a toll on your well-being. When things get stressful and there’s already a feeling of burnout, don’t hesitate to just do your thing! It helps to have hobbies or pursue passion projects to serve as a relaxing outlet and bring along a sense of happiness and accomplishment that’s personal and uniquely you.

Power your mind through meditation.

With everything happening around us, your mind may feel like it’s constantly running a marathon. Taking a moment for meditative peace and breathing exercises can help give your brain a chance to slow down, unwind, and relax.

Spend some time doing meditation exercises, like deep-breathing, yoga meditation, and other relaxation exercises.

Cut out the clutter.

It’s been said that reducing clutter helps reduce overall stress. Too much distraction and visual stimulation can take up space not just in one’s home, but also in one’s mind, so make sure to purge unnecessary things and make space only for what’s essential. This is also applicable in what we choose to stay on our phone. It’s important to streamline the services and choose only the apps that you need for your day to day!

Multifunctional apps like ING help you save on time by letting you do multiple tasks easily. When you open a digital account with ING, you can get access to both ING Save and ING Pay services.

With ING Save, you can enjoy a high interest rate of 4.0% p.a for the first four months if you open an account until September 30, 2021.

You can also manage your payments from the comfort of your home—without those pesky transaction fees—through ING Pay. It’s simple, easy, and convenient, so you can do your thing with less clutter and distractions! You can pay your bills to up to 80 merchants, use your ING Pay VISA Debit Card for online transactions, and transfer money to any banks for free via InstaPay!

In times like these, it’s important to keep your mind and body as strong as they can be. Follow these tips to have a more optimistic outlook as we wait for better days to come!
